Technique

The saxophone is a lovely instrument.  It’s sound and looks are admired by many people.  However, you could come up against difficulties if you have not been learning the correct way from the start.  From how you hold a sax, abdominal breathing, to having the correct embouchure.  All make the difference to your future progress.

One of my students recently said to me “I’ve learnt more tonight than the last three years struggling on my own.”

The Saxophone

saxophone-playerWhich Saxophone should I use?

For those just starting out an Alto Sax is probably more appropriate, however, if you prefer and feel comfortable starting off with a Tenor Sax then go for it, either is fine.

The Mouthpiece

Rather than go to any extra expense at the beginning stage, stay with the mouthpiece that came with your Saxophone for the time being until you feel ready to commit to a more expensive make.

There are a variety of mouthpieces to choose from.  When you have been playing for a while and got a feel for the saxophone, that would be a better time to experiment with different mouthpieces.

The Ligature

The ligature, the same advice really given to that of the mouthpieces.  Set-ups (mouthpiece & ligature combination). Everyone has his or her favourites.  It’s really down to what suits you.
